The Zoev City Box

The Zoev City Box is the ultimate modular solution for refrigerated and non-refrigerated urban freight transport by water and land.

The box was developed based on years of practical experience and successful pilot projects in the heart of Amsterdam, in collaboration with logistics partners such as PostNL, Bidfood, and Heineken, as well as the system’s daily users.

The result is a compact, urban version of the shipping container, specially designed for efficient and sustainable last-mile distribution.

Thanks to the use of standard roll containers, the Zoev City Box integrates seamlessly with existing distribution centers, requiring no or only minimal adjustments to the logistics process.

The Zoev City Box thus serves as a future-proof link in emission-free urban logistics, intelligently combining transport by water and road.

The Zoev City Box – this is why

City centers are imposing increasingly strict restrictions on heavy traffic. In Amsterdam, a 7.5-metric-ton zone is already in effect in large parts of the city center, and efforts are underway to implement further restrictions, including a 3.5-metric-ton limit and zero-emission zones. At the same time, docks are under strain, and traffic and logistics are causing increasing congestion in the city.

The Zoev City Box offers a future-proof solution to this challenge. By consolidating goods into modular units and intelligently combining transport via water and road, it reduces reliance on heavy freight traffic in the city center. This relieves pressure on docks and streets, lowers emissions, and contributes to a more pleasant city.

The solution is also well-thought-out in terms of its street presence. The reflective exterior of the City Box ensures a visually unobtrusive integration into the historic city center, making logistics less noticeable in public spaces.

In this way, the Zoev City Box enables sustainable, efficient, and city-friendly supply operations in a city center where heavy traffic is being squeezed out of more and more space.

Water and Road Transport

The Zoev City Box, combined with a zero-emission vessel, offers a sustainable logistics solution for the city center—with a focus on clean air, reduced traffic, and a pleasant living environment.

Do you need sustainable transportation for roll containers, pallets, or packages from a distribution center outside the city center to stores or restaurants? Then the Zoev City Box is ideal for last-mile distribution.

From distribution center to front door

The logistics process is thoroughly thought out and efficiently organized:

  1. Goods are delivered by truck to the distribution center.
  2. There, the goods are loaded into the Zoev City Boxes and transferred to the barges using a ship-to-shore crane (7 Zoev City Boxes = 42 roll containers).
  3. An E-pusher transports two fully loaded barges to a buffer location on the outskirts of the city.
  4. On the outskirts of the city, the loaded barges are ready for transport to the city center or back to the distribution center.
  5. The self-propelled barge sails to one of ten strategically selected loading and unloading locations, where the Zoev City Boxes are hoisted onto the trailer using the E-loading/unloading crane.
  6. The E-puller then transports the goods to their final destination, after which the packaging material is collected for return.
  7. The barge returns to the distribution center via the same route and following the same procedure.

A comprehensive logistics sequencing and planning model has been developed within this system, ensuring that City Boxes are always loaded and unloaded in the correct order. This minimizes wait times, maximizes efficiency, and ensures reliable deliveries.

Transportation by water is carried out in collaboration with Zoev City, a specialist in sustainable urban logistics by water.

Efficient on the Road, Too

The Zoev City Box isn’t just suitable for water transport.

The boxes can also be transported in groups by road—for example, with multiple boxes on a single trailer—allowing for flexible switching between water and road transport.
